Field science classes
Professional educators, as well as outdoor activities facilitators, are an integral part of the Outer Edge Performance team. Together, they lead innovative environmental education programs designed to introduce grade school, middle school and high school students to our natural world.
- 90-minute field science classes geared toward students at any level
- Students receive a field journal to log activities and observations
- Aligned with state educational standards
- Experiential avenue for learning or testing traditional classroom curricula
Renewable Energy
What is renewable energy and why is it so important in today's world? In this topical class, students learn about solar, wind and hydropower energy through discussion of concepts and through hands-on exercises such as making a solar oven – a working renewable energy instrument. They'll also have some fun with renewable energy (think solar 'smores).
- Grades 4 to 12
- 90 minutes day or evening
Freshwater Ecology
The human body is 66% water. 75% of the earth is covered water. But how much do you know about this substance that is vital to life? In Freshwater Ecology, students learn about the freshwater environments around them by conducting real field research. The curriculum covers ecological concepts and terms related to freshwater and the importance of freshwater in our lives and the world's ecosystems, and introduces kids to aquatic invertebrates (the insect kind). They'll also have the chance to practice the scientific method and field research skills such as collection, testing and identification.
- Kindergarten through grade 12
- 90 minutes during the day
Wildlife Ecology
What is a habitat and what keeps one in balance? In this hands-on field science class we'll explore basic ecological concepts that relate to wildlife and how the human race can affect the ecological systems. Through discussion and "adaptation games" students will learn about concepts such as carrying capacity and population, and biomagnifications and their effects on wildlife and humans.
Compass and Orienteering
Outdoor enthusiasts of all ages need to know how to use a compass. This field science class covers the history of this important navigation instrument, the scientific principals behind it and how to use a compass to determine direction and more. Students put their newfound knowledge to the test with field exercises such as setting and taking a bearing.
- Age 5 to young adult
- 90 minutes during the day
Nature and Discovery Hike
There's so much to explore – just reach out and touch, smell, listen and taste the natural world around you. The Nature and Discovery Hike is a personal and group discovery of the environment through careful observation and discussion, with an emphasis on each participant making one special discovery. Students identify plants and animals native to Colorado, learn about the different uses of plants (by humans and animals), and record their observations in their field journals. They also learn about trail safety and potential hazards.
- Grades 4 to 12
- 90 minutes day or night
